Average Speed vs Moving Speed: Why Stops Matter
Average speed is total distance divided by the time included in the calculation. Moving speed excludes time classified as stopped. The same trip can therefore produce two valid numbers, provided you know the time definition.
A worked example
You cover 12 km in 60 minutes, including a 15-minute break.
- Whole-trip average: 12 km รท 1 hour = 12 km/h.
- Average while moving: 12 km รท 0.75 hour = 16 km/h.
Neither result is your maximum speed. A brief fast section does not determine the average for the entire trip.
Why different tools disagree
A recording may include all elapsed time, only time while a session is active, or time above a motion threshold. Pausing manually can exclude a break; an automatic pause may classify very slow movement as stopped. Signal gaps add further uncertainty.
These are general definitions, not a claim that every SpeedX interface offers automatic pause or both averages. Check the labels and behavior of the version you use. The current standalone web speedometer shows current, minimum and maximum speed plus elapsed time; it is not a distance-based trip-average calculator.
Compare trips fairly
- Use the same distance unit and timing definition.
- Record whether you paused at stops.
- Check route gaps before interpreting a faster average.
- Compare similar terrain and conditions.
For commute planning, whole-trip average is often more useful because waiting time affects arrival. For training, moving average can describe active effort, but should be considered alongside route and stops.
Can I average displayed speed samples?
Only with care. A simple mean assumes equally spaced samples and compatible treatment of gaps. For a trip, distance divided by the relevant total time is clearer than averaging a handful of screenshots.
