Does a GPS Speedometer Work Without Internet?

A phone with a working satellite receiver can usually measure GPS speed without mobile data. But an offline speed reading, an offline map and an offline website are three different things. Check each before leaving coverage.

What can work without data?

Satellite reception does not require a cellular data connection. Your phone still needs location permission, usable satellite signals and software that can access the readings. Assisted positioning can help the initial fix; without network assistance, finding a position may take longer.

A map is separate: map tiles and route information may need a connection unless they are already available offline. A blank map therefore does not automatically mean GPS has failed.

What about the SpeedX website?

Open the online speedometer while connected. The site caches some resources, but it does not download every page in advance. An unvisited tool page may fail to open offline, and cached content may be removed by the browser. Browser location providers also vary; a laptop may depend on network positioning rather than a satellite receiver.

Check before your trip

  1. Open your chosen tool or app and grant location access.
  2. Go outdoors with a clear view of the sky and check for live readings.
  3. Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi, then repeat a short walking test.
  4. Reload the page offline separately to test whether it remains accessible.

Do not assume that airplane mode behaves identically on every device. Test the configuration you actually plan to use.

Does offline mean unlimited recording?

No. Background operation, battery limits and trip storage depend on the software and operating system. A browser tab is not a reliable substitute for a dedicated recording session. Test the installed SpeedX app before relying on it for a long trip.
